Chapter Eleven

COLLIN didn’t return to the house for dinner the night before, and even though he hadn’t returned for breakfast or lunch today, Jess was still disappointed when he once again didn’t show for dinner. Jack had done his best to alleviate the sadness that had seeped into Jess’s system, yet even with Jack’s best efforts at keeping his mind occupied and his body relaxed, Jess simply couldn’t. He’d spent the entire evening tossing and turning. If he wasn’t thinking about the devastated look on Collin’s face, he was remembering what it felt like to be on the receiving end of unrequited love. The lack of sleep was now a double-edged sword. He was tense from the sleep deprivation, and although he had tried to get some shut-eye earlier, his body, due to the tension and exhaustion, decided it was a good time to work on its contortionist routines instead.

The hot shower didn’t help much. Jess brushed his hair and then his teeth, afterward wiping his mouth on the damp towel. His reflection was a testament to what he was feeling. Dark circles under his bloodshot eyes. His skin was dull and his jaw covered in dark stubble that he just couldn’t find the energy to rectify. “Damn, dude. You look like shit,” Jess scolded his reflection. His face was the only part of his anatomy that hadn’t been left scarred by the car accident, but now it looked as if it had taken the brunt of it. Tossing the damp towel in the hamper, Jess flicked the lights out and rolled his chair into his room.

Jack sat on the edge of Jess’s bed, pen in hand, writing notes on his clipboard. He looked up when he heard Jess enter the room, giving him a warm smile. “Feel better?”

“Cleaner.”

“I’ll see what I can do to help you relax.” Setting his notes aside, Jack stood and pulled back the covers on the bed before stepping back to allow Jess access. “Lay on your stomach.”

Jess maneuvered the chair close to the bed, set the locks, and then shifted from his chair to the mattress. Once Jess was on the bed, Jack picked up the wheelchair and set it aside, then helped him settle at the center of the bed, his hand brushing along Jess’s calf. “Painful?”

The soft mattress beneath him felt like a cloud of feathers, and he snuggled farther into its depths. “Not any more than usual. I think either the new med Doc Savona gave me is working, or I’m turning into a masochist. Even after the fun-time cramps, they don’t seem to be hurting as much as the last couple of days.” Either one of those or the hurt in his heart was overshadowing the pain below his knees, which was a very real possibility.

“A third option,” Jack added as he crawled onto the bed, “is you’re healing.”

“Maybe,” he responded.

Jack straddled Jess’s thighs, the majority of his weight being supported by his knees rather than Jess’s body. Warm, oil-slick
